In the Next Room or the vibrator play

In October 2012, we’ll present our first mainstage show of the season, “In the Next Room or the vibrator play” by contemporary author Sarah Ruhl. This titillating and heartbreaking look at the world of women’s issues in the late Victorian era was nominated for three Tony awards in 2010.

The play centers around a doctor who, in his home with his wife present but uninformed, cures women of their hysteria by way of the vibrating machine in his office. His wife’s confusion about her own sexual identity fuels her onward in a quest to discover what exactly is happening “in the next room.” In a world that so often cheapens the value and importance of sex, Ruhl’s play puts sex center stage in an illuminating and sometimes depressing light.
